Intrinsically Safe Humidity Temperature Measurement

Designed for hazardous applications, the HygroClip Ex probes provide combined measurement of humidity and temperature when used together with any HygroFlex transmitter. The probes can also be factory configured for use without a transmitter. When configured in that manner, the probes measure either humidity or temperature and provide a 4-20 mA output signal equal to 0...100 %RH or  0...100°C. The HygroClip Ex probes should be installed and used as specified in the FM Certificate of Compliance.

Humidity measurement with the HygroClip® digital technology

Humidity measurement benefits significantly from digital signal processing in five key areas:

height="81">

1. Accuracy and Stability: humidity measurement from the sensor is processed digitally, providing more scope and greater flexibility when compensating sensor characteristics such as linearity and temperature coefficient. The ROTRONIC Hygromer ® capacitive humidity sensor has always been the leader both in precision and stability. With the application of digital technology, sensor performance is now further improved. HygroClip products have an internal digital signal resolution of  up to 0.03%RH and 0.03°C

By nature, digital circuits are more stable than their analog counterparts. When there is a choice, preference should be given to the direct use of the digital output signal provided by many of our humidity probes and instruments. Doing so eliminates the error usually associated with reading / converting instrument analog output signals, especially current (mA) signals. As a matter of fact, the output signals from most measuring instruments used in process monitoring and control are fed to some digital device.

2. Maintenance and Calibration: Unique HygroClip modular technology allows the humidity probe and other instrument components to be interchanged without loss of measurement accuracy. Humidity calibration and sensor data are retained permanently within each digital HygroClip probe. When it is time for scheduled calibration, any plug-in HygroClip probe can be ‘hot swapped’ in seconds. There is virtually no downtime: the modular design of the HygroClip product line makes it often unnecessary to remove complete instruments to a laboratory or workshop for maintenance or repairs.

Software-based calibration is both simple and precise: there is no hard-to-reach, hard-to-adjust potentiometer. The ability of our instruments to communicate together digitally facilitates on-site performance verification and loop validation.

3. Networking: Multiple point measurement? We offer a number of software applications that provide ready-made networking solutions ranging from a small number to an almost unlimited number of instruments, each with multiple probes. These applications operate on a Windows-based PC and feature data logging, advanced graphical and alarm functions as well as probe adjustment and instrument configuration. The network can either a dedicated RS-485 network or a non-dedicated Ethernet network offering the possibility of sending data over the Internet. A server application with OPC tags is available for centralizing humidity data with other process data within practically any third party OPC client application.

4. Measurement of Dew Point and other Parameters: Digital technology makes it possible to obtain parameters such as dew point or the mixing ratio with economical, versatile and easy-to-maintain instruments and probes. Compare the HygroClip product line to existing chilled mirror technology - typical requirements and problems are eliminated: no sampling system is required in most applications, the uncertainty between dew and frost is eliminated, and there is no mirror that requires frequent cleaning.

  5. Flexibility: Need dew-point instead of relative humidity? Or the mixing ratio? Simply change your instrument configuration directly from the keypad or connect your instrument to a PC!  Different application? If your requirements vary, simply fit one of the wide range of probes available with an alternative configuration or temperature operating range.
