Refrigerant Evacuation: What is it and Why is it Important?

If you have ever had to maintain or repair an air conditioning or refrigeration system, you may have come across the term "refrigerant evacuation". But what exactly is refrigerant evacuation, and why is it important? In this blog post, we'll explore the answers to these questions.
What exactly is Refrigerant Evacuation?
Let’s start with the basics, shall we? Refrigerant evacuation is the process of removing all the refrigerant from an air conditioning or refrigeration system. This process is necessary to eliminate any moisture, air, or other contaminants from the system, which are problems for HVAC technicians. These contaminants can cause damage or reduce efficiency of the system.
To perform refrigerant evacuation, a vacuum pump is used to remove the refrigerant from the system. The pump pulls the refrigerant into a recovery machine, which stores the refrigerant for later disposal or reuse. Once the refrigerant is removed, the system is left under vacuum for a period of time to ensure that all moisture and air is removed from the system.

If moisture or air is left in the system, it can lead to corrosion, ice formation, and reduce efficiency. Moisture can also react with refrigerant and cause the formation of acids, which can damage the compressor and other components of the system. Yikes!

When a system is opened up for repair or replacement, air and moisture can enter the system, which can also cause damage or poor efficiency. By performing refrigerant evacuation before repairs or replacements, the system can be returned to its original efficiency and performance levels.
In addition to ensuring proper system function, refrigerant evacuation is also required by law. Refrigerant evacuation is an important aspect of HVAC maintenance and repair, and is required by law in Canada. The handling and disposal of ozone-depleting substances and their alternatives, including refrigerants, is regulated by the Canadian government through the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA) and the Ozone-depleting Substances and Halocarbon Alternatives Regulations. 
These regulations require that all refrigerant-containing equipment be properly evacuated before it is disposed of or recycled, and that the refrigerant be recovered and recycled or destroyed by a licensed professional. Failure to comply with these regulations can result in fines and other penalties.
Refrigerant evacuation is also required by law in the United-States. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) mandates that refrigerant must be recovered and recycled or properly disposed of to prevent environmental harm. Failing to evacuate refrigerant properly can result in fines and legal consequences for individuals or companies responsible for the system.
